Violent Serenity was created about 4 years ago when I decided that it was finally time to give my site a name. I created my first website back in 1996, when I first discovered you could write simple HTML using a text editor and put them up somewhere. That somewhere was first a webserver on my PC in my dorm room, which then moved to the webserver owned by CMU and later to a UNIX server run by a very good friend of mine in Pittsburgh.
Things have evolved from the really simple, cheesy site I made when I was barely out of high school. It was always a place for my thoughts, morphing from a few pages with essays to the Wordpress blog you see now. During that time, I’ve changed from using blogger, to greymatter, to moveable type and finally wordpress.
So where does the name come from? I’ve always been a fan of oxymorons, words of opposite meanings strung together to create a new idea. And those two words seemed perfect to describe myself and the world around me. When we look at our surroundings, we can’t help but notice that chaos and order play a huge role in everything. Like the ancient Eastern philosophy of yin and yang, taken seperately, they are one-dimensional; one prevents stability and safety, while the other prevents change. But taken together, they create a wonderful dynamic in which they play off the strengths of one another, instead of their weaknesses. The world can’t exist without both of these forces acting together.
