Vapor Transmission
Fog rules my world. The definition of fog is as follows:
Watery vapor condensed in the lower part of the atmosphere and disturbing its transparency. It differs from cloud only in being near the ground, and from mist in not approaching so nearly to fine rain.
For as long as I can remember, fog is one of those things that absolutely mystify me (no pun intended). It really shouldn’t since I know exactly what it is. But from the time I was a little boy, I remember being amazed by fog.
Living in NY, fog is no stranger to me. I would run out into the street whenever there was heavy fog and just marvel. I remember looking in one direction at how thick the fog was, run over to a spot I couldn’t see previously and try to look back at where I was. I remember being confused as to why I could still see the same distance as I could before and it wouldn’t be until years had passed before I finally realized why that was.
I remember this heavy fog that settled over Long Island two years or so ago. It was winter break and I was coming home from a friend’s house. It was extremely foggy, and we took my friend’s father’s pathfinder cause it had fog lights. Not necessarily our choice, but the only one we had. Anyways, the fog was so thick that we couldn’t see more than maybe 10 feet in front of us. We couldn’t see the signs on the highway until we passed them. Forget about even trying to read them. But it was amazing. Quiet serenity.
The fog out here is pretty cool too. My apt complex is right next to a creek which is approximately 30-40 feet below street level. Every morning just about, there is a tiny little bit of fog which lingers over the creek in the small valley next to my building. It’s really quite a nice site to see early in the day. It’s like looking at the inspiration for a Bob Ross painting.
I love how fog just sort of rolls in from the ocean. I love how it can blanket an entire city and how it rolls over the hills just to settle in the dimples between them.
Absolutely magical.
