February 2007

as i’m whittling down my book queue at home–i’m about 30% through the time traveler’s wife–i took a gander at my “books to read” list that i keep on amazon and there’s something i noticed about my list of 94 books. with the exception of a new translation of the aenid and some cookbooks, my list is basically post-2005 novels. not much in terms of nonfiction and a great lack of older “great” literature. the last piece of lit that i read was lolita and it was truly an amazing novel.

i’ve been looking at the top 10 lists that have been posted on amazon’s book blog recently and it made me wonder if i need to add some older books to that list. so i’m looking for suggestions from you.

what would you consider to be a “top 10″ greatest novel?

don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot i love about Whole Foods: the fresh vegetables, the bulk dry goods, the cheeses, the meat cases and it’s focus on sustainable food sources. but after paying over $12 for a whole red snapper (which was delicious, btw) i think i need to find a new source for my seafood.

i think it’s because i’m used to seafood sections at the chinese markets in flushing, where whole fish are the norm and fillets are almost never served and paying $6.99/lb for a fish was considered expensive. i went to Whole Foods today looking to pick up ingredients for a lentil and sausage dish i’m making tomorrow and since it was friday and also the third day of Lent, i thought i’d pick up a fish to poach for dinner. they had some tai snapper on sale for $6.99/lb and one red snapper for $8.99/lb. since i wasn’t in the vicinity of 99 ranch i picked up the red snapper (which i’ll admit was very, very fresh) for dinner.

i’ve also been thinking about trying to find a local butcher for my meat though the beef i bought at Whole Foods a few weeks ago was very, very good and they do have a very nice selection. i did some poking around on Yelp and found some places which were highly recommended, so i’m going to go check them out tomorrow and see what they have and what their prices are.

any one know of a good butcher and fish market in the south bay?

This totally made me laugh and smile on what’s a pretty crappy morning filled with shivering and ickiness:

Ugh…I hate feeling feverish :(

Wow, for like the first time ever my bag arrived at baggage claim before I did!

And the long-term parking bus was right there too and pulled away right after I boarded. Someone must really want me home :)

This made me laugh just now:

Query: Roses are red, violets are blue; I hear a rumor, is it true?

Reply: Roses are red, violets are blue. I love you Sam, our bid is 52

“New York at the Gate”

Maybe it’s because it’s early in the morning and I’m sitting in the airport in Manchester fueled soley by caffeine after spending long days working in temps which never reached 27, but I found that really funny.

Hmm…I maybe a “Californian” but my heart really is in NY as I’m sitting here with a copy of the New York Times and New York magazine :)

Can’t wait to get back home to 60 degree weather, though probably not as much as Jen, for whom home currently is experiencing 80 degree weather. As much as I like the cold, below-zero windchills are something I don’t miss!
