don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot i love about Whole Foods: the fresh vegetables, the bulk dry goods, the cheeses, the meat cases and it’s focus on sustainable food sources. but after paying over $12 for a whole red snapper (which was delicious, btw) i think i need to find a new source for my seafood.

i think it’s because i’m used to seafood sections at the chinese markets in flushing, where whole fish are the norm and fillets are almost never served and paying $6.99/lb for a fish was considered expensive. i went to Whole Foods today looking to pick up ingredients for a lentil and sausage dish i’m making tomorrow and since it was friday and also the third day of Lent, i thought i’d pick up a fish to poach for dinner. they had some tai snapper on sale for $6.99/lb and one red snapper for $8.99/lb. since i wasn’t in the vicinity of 99 ranch i picked up the red snapper (which i’ll admit was very, very fresh) for dinner.

i’ve also been thinking about trying to find a local butcher for my meat though the beef i bought at Whole Foods a few weeks ago was very, very good and they do have a very nice selection. i did some poking around on Yelp and found some places which were highly recommended, so i’m going to go check them out tomorrow and see what they have and what their prices are.

any one know of a good butcher and fish market in the south bay?
