News Tidbits

This made me laugh just now:

Query: Roses are red, violets are blue; I hear a rumor, is it true?

Reply: Roses are red, violets are blue. I love you Sam, our bid is 52

“New York at the Gate”

Maybe it’s because it’s early in the morning and I’m sitting in the airport in Manchester fueled soley by caffeine after spending long days working in temps which never reached 27, but I found that really funny.

Hmm…I maybe a “Californian” but my heart really is in NY as I’m sitting here with a copy of the New York Times and New York magazine :)

Can’t wait to get back home to 60 degree weather, though probably not as much as Jen, for whom home currently is experiencing 80 degree weather. As much as I like the cold, below-zero windchills are something I don’t miss!

Reading this story made me so sad (full story here):

A woman whose premature baby died the day after she was arrested has sued the Kansas City Police Department and two officers who repeatedly ignored her pleas for medical help while they were arresting her.

A police videotape released Tuesday shows Sofia Salva telling police officers numerous times on Feb. 5, 2006, that she was pregnant, bleeding and needed to go to a hospital. After the ninth request, a female officer asked: “How is that my problem?”

Salva, a Sudanese native, was held overnight on traffic violations and outstanding city warrants. After being released the next morning, she delivered a premature baby boy who died after one minute.

This says it all:

Excerpted from Open Book:

Nancy Pelosi is in a very powerful position, a Catholic, and is working in opposition to a fundamental, moral teaching of her faith: the preciousness of each human life from conception. She lives in a country in which unborn human beings are unprotected by the law, in which the culture, at every level, dehumanizes them, and she, who is in a position to do something about this, in word and deed, does nothing to help the cause of bringing greater awareness of the humanity of the unborn, and works against legal protection and is the hero of organizations that are the activist core arrayed against the humanity of the unborn. There is not a speck of ambiguity here.

From an article I saw in the NY Times:

Babies are born rude, and it is their keepers’ duty to transform them from loud houseguests making outrageous demands at all hours of the night to charming people who might make some babies themselves.

You guys all know how I feel about what’s happened to etiquette in this country, so I won’t comment any further.

this is a sad, sad day for everyone…people of every creed, race, religion…

Pope John Paul II was the only pope that I’ve ever known. It’s estimated that half of the world 1 billion Catholics are in the same situation that I find myself in, a tremendous number considering the longevity of the man known as the Vicar of Christ has never really been very long. And while it’s true that I only really became involved with the Church over the last few years, I feel a great feeling of sadness…

I am happy though that the man who has suffered so much over the last few years is finally at peace, in the loving arms of Christ…

Rest in Peace, Karol Jozef Wojtyla. Your impact on this world can never be quanitied. You will be missed by all…
